WEEK 1

Several definitions of strategy with Michael Porter the heart of it.

Great feedback from Nobuhle:

How different is Sanjiv Ahuja’s view of strategy from that of Stuart Grief? Justify your answer.

Sanjiv Ahuja and Stuart Grief have different views about strategy. According to Sanjiv a strategy should be set by a leader. He believes that a leader should come up with a strategy that is simple and understandable, the strategy must be well communicated to the whole team so that each individual or employee understands their part in the execution of the strategy. Sanjiv emphasises on the simplicity of the strategy. He also believes that the strategy formulation is an event or an episode and that the same strategy should be followed for a period of time.

Stuart Grief has a different view about strategy, he believes that different strategies from different business units must complement each other in order to achieve the same goals, he believes that strategy formulation should be an ongoing process like a dialogue. Strategy should keep evolving to match with  the current environmental conditions. Stuart Grief also believes that strategies should be continuous in nature in order to recognise issues that arise and deal with them as they arise and not be treated as an event or episode.

  1. Comments from Lee
According to Sanjiv Ahuja’s leaders of businesses create strategies, which is then are communicated to each employee within the organisations. He says it’s important that the goals and objectives are clear and in a simplified manner, making it easy for each employee to understand what’s required from them day in and day out. Each employee’s roles contribute to making the strategy a success. Sanjiv Ahuja’s emphasise the importance of having clear and simplified goals.
Stuart Grief is a consultant who assists clients who are owners of businesses to set up strategies. According to him a strategy should be treated as a living idea and discussed on a daily basis, allowing more people to get a better understanding of their business strategy and thus resulting in the strategy being pushed forward every time they engage in it. He says due to fast changing market environments, strategies must be flexible and reviewed often and changes made accordingly to prevent the strategy from hitting a dead end and becoming useless to the business as customers, competitors and other elements of the markets have moved on
The difference between the two views is that:
Sanjiv Ahuja’s focuses on the importance of business communicating their strategy clearly to their staff and ensuring they understand their objectives as this will decide if the strategy is successful or not.
Stuart Grief argues that organisations must treat strategies as living idea and must be considered as an on-going dialogue, thus allowing businesses to stay abreast and respond quickly to change.

  3. Hi All and sorry for the late response

A key concept that is evident in the video clip by Stuart Grief and Sanjiv Ahuja is the concept of deliberate vs. emergent strategy that is featured in Mitzberg's 5Ps.
Grief advocates an emergent strategy where organisations should continuously engage in ongoing dialogue in response to changing environmental conditions and possible unrealized strategy objectives as opposed to Ahuja who emphasises that strategy needs to be simple and executable for it to be understood by everyone; not changed or adapted.

    All the best
